Adding the MSFS Community Folder as a Library in Windows 10/11

You are here:

Since so many people are having issues finding and copying addon scenery into their MSFS community folder, we have this little solution that will make things a lot easier!

Windows 10/11 allows you to add any folder to your Library making finding the community folder a lot easier using File Explorer in Windows. The library in Windows is where you will find links to your Music, Pictures, and Video folders among others.

First you will need to start Microsoft Flight Simulator and allow it to continue until you reach the main screen as below.

Click on OPTIONS at the top of the screen to proceed.

Select GENERAL OPTIONS.

Choose the DEVELOPERS option as indicated and the make sure it is turned on.

You will see the following menu appear at the top of your screen.

Click on the TOOLS option and then on VIRTUAL FILE SYSTEM.

You will now see two buttoned options on your screen: one for the OFFICIAL folder and one for the COMMUNITY folder.

The OFFICIAL folder is where Microsoft stores everything that you have downloaded from the Marketplace, free and paid addons.

The COMMUNITY folder is what we are interested in as this is where we need to copy addons we have downloaded on our own.

Click on OPEN COMMUNITY FOLDER to proceed.

The File Explorer will now open, showing you the contents of your Community Folder if you have previously added anything in there.

Look at the top of the screen where the URL window is. You will see three options there: LOCALCACHE > PACKAGES > COMMUNITY. Click on the PACKAGES option to step one folder back.

You will now see the two folders: COMMUNITY and OFFICIAL.

Right Click on the COMMUNITY folder. If you are using Windows 11, you will need to choose “more options” to see the full list of options as indicated above.

Choose INCLUDE IN LIBRARY and then CREATE NEW LIBRARY. Give your new library a name. We have chosen “MSFS Community” and you will see it on the screen shot above, but you can choose any other name if you like.

That is all there is to it! Enjoy!
