Description

King Shaka International Airport (FALE) was conceptualized in the 1960’s when it was realized that the old Louis Botha/Durban International airport (FADN), to the south of Durban, would soon reach its capacity.

Construction began in 1973 and by 1975 the earthworks and a storm drainage system to the value of R320 million were completed. By 1982, the project was halted due to the economic slowdown. A local Micro light club made use of the grassed over runway. The new airport was named La Mercy Airport (FALE) after the town of La Mercy located five kilometers east of the airport.

Construction at the airport site recommenced on the 24 August 2007 and the airport was opened on the 1st of May 2010. King Shaka International Airport (FALE) is located 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the City of Durban.

Having been an FSX user for years with most of NMG products installed in the Sim, I recently made the rather costly move to Prepar3d V4. As a South African who loves doing flights around SA in the Sim, I knew I had to get the P3d V4 Airports from NMG (thanks for the upgrade discount NMG). So I purchased the 3 main city airports and will hopefully add the others down the line.

South Africa seems to be a neglected part on the flight sim world, so its wonderful that NMG have produced such realistic and accurate scenery of most of the airports in SA. A good example of this neglect is many AI Traffic addons still use the FAJS code for OR Tambo airport and the Alpha India Group who have not even SAA flight plans in the repository. For another the iconic Table Mountain looks simply awful. NMG’s African Terrain Mesh renders this unique mountain accurately. It is simply wonderful flying into NMG Cape Town International with a good looking and accurate representation of this world famous mountain that the terrain mesh fixes. So if you are flying in SA, to SA or from SA, NMG’s range of SA airports is well worth the reasonable costs. You won’t find these airports of this quality anywhere else.
